ORANGE BEACH, Ala.– Columbia Southern University's College of Safety and Emergency Services faculty recently awarded its annual Outstanding Safety Professional of the Year Award to Danny Simpson. Simpson, the director of health and safety at a national construction firm, is a veteran and resident of Iowa, Louisiana.
Simpson has worked in occupational safety and health for 33 years, 17 of which have been in construction. He transitioned into safety after witnessing a co-worker get injured on the job and eventually wrote a book on the pillars of safety: support, accountability, focus and evaluation (S.A.F.E.).
“The most important aspect of my role, and any leader's role, is to provide the tools necessary and inspire the team members to be engaged in the direction of the company,” said Simpson. “I had hoped my book would serve as a guide to leaders…I am most proud of those new leaders who have stated to me that they go back to the book over and over when new issues come up in their role.”
Simpson is a member of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, the American Society of Safety Professionals and the National Society of Leadership and Success.
“I feel tremendously honored, thankful and blessed to have won this award,” he said. “I have always wanted to make a positive impact on as many people as possible in my career and winning this award is recognition of those efforts.”
The Outstanding Safety Professional Award was established by CSU to recognize National Safety Month, observed annually in June, and to celebrate its occupational safety and health students and graduates for their commitments to safety, professionalism and their accomplishments.
