The world of law enforcement has been changing over the past few years. Local, state, national and even global government agencies have been facing budget cuts and security has become a hot topic in the private sector.
In coping with these changes, many in law enforcement are turning to online education to shore up their skills and improve their career options or ambitions. One such person is Craig D’Souza, who graduated from Columbia Southern University with a master’s degree in business administration in 2012.
D’Souza is a former detective constable with Toronto Police Service for eight years who is now a special investigator for a major corporation. He also worked as a management consultant at Boardroom Metrics.
D’Souza explained that more in law enforcement are turning to the private sector and seeking degrees to help them.
“Corporate security enables me to hone and utilize my talents that extend beyond the traditional policing structure. My MBA degree from Columbia Southern University has given me instant credibility and traction in policing and the private sector,” he said. “My background is unique in being an emergency worker with business inclinations and associations. Public agencies are increasingly transitioning towards sound business practices and the MBA gave me relevant expertise.”
D’Souza was able to get his degree thanks to CSU’s flexible online format and enrollment.
“Given the nature of my work in the policing sphere and corporate security, a conventional classroom setting would not work. Through research and in speaking with CSU staff, I was drawn to the format of course offerings. To me, CSU is committed to success by being a student-centric learning institution,” he said.
D’Souza expects his 2012 degree to continue to make him a valuable commodity to businesses.
“My policing background combined with my MBA from CSU, enables me to relate to clients from a security perspective, while being mindful of business implications. I am in the company of executives that I can relate to immediately, based on my educational background.”
