25 Years and Counting: A Look at CSU's History

History of CSU
A pioneer in online learning, Columbia Southern University’s founder Dr. Robert Mayes, Sr., began with the vision of creating educational opportunities for students whose lifestyles and learning styles required more flexibility than what was offered by traditional brick-and-mortar schools.

In the beginning, Dr. Mayes started out developing and distributing occupational safety and environmental compliance training programs to small businesses, ultimately leading to the establishment of two industry certificate programs, and later, the founding of CSU in 1993.

Staying true to its roots, CSU has continued to establish itself as an online education leader in the safety and emergency services industry, adding programs including business, criminal justice, fire science, human resource management, public administration and more. CSU now offers a full-scope of degree offerings including associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral-level programs and certificates.*

In 2014, CSU was named one of the Best Companies to Work for in Alabama by Business Alabama magazine. Today, CSU continues to focus on building long-term relationships while providing an exceptional student experience, affordable tuition and a flexible learning format to its growing student population.
