Pioneering Missouri Female Firefighter Earns National Scholarship

In recognition of her dedication and pioneering spirit, firefighter Dana Osborne of Nixa, Missouri, was recently awarded a scholarship to pursue a degree from Columbia Southern University. In a challenge to push herself, she decided to try to inspire others in the fire service to maintain their cardiac health by running in full turnout gear in the Hennepin Hundred trail race in Illinois last year. Her goal was to bring awareness and help reduce the leading cause of firefighter deaths, sudden cardiac arrest.

Columbia Southern University’s Master of Science in occupational safety and health degree program, and its environmental management concentration, was recently named as a Graduate Safety Practitioner® Qualified Academic Program by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).

Patrick Bucksot Awarded Safety Scholarship

Patrick Bucksot of New Bern, North Carolina, was awarded an occupational safety and health scholarship from Columbia Southern University. Each year, CSU offers two safety scholarships that cover up to 60 credit hours toward one online degree program. The scholarship will be applied to the Bucksot’s tuition for up to three years or until the completion of the associate degree.

National Safety Council, CSU Partnership Provides Educational Benefits to Safety Professionals Nationwide

In 2018, Columbia Southern University entered a Learning Partnership with the National Safety Council (NSC). Through the partnership, employees and volunteers at the NSC’s national headquarters in Itasca, Illinois, and its 25 chapters across the nation, will be able to pursue their educational goals at CSU with a 10 percent tuition discount and access to exclusive scholarship opportunities. Benefits of this Learning Partnership are also available to the immediate families of NSC employees and volunteers.

St. John's David Milen Named Distinguished Faculty of the Year

Columbia Southern University recently honored emergency management lead faculty David Milen, Ph.D., as the 2018 recipient of its Robert G. Mayes, Sr. Distinguished Faculty Award. Milen of St. John, Indiana, was recognized for his outstanding achievements and contributions in aiding the university in its mission to change lives through education.

Firefighter and Mother of Three LaShawndra Roberts Pursues Degree with CSU Fire Scholarship

LaShawndra Roberts, a firefighter and EMT at Clayton County (Georgia) Fire & Emergency Services, is the recipient of the 2018 CSU Fire Scholarship. For Roberts, the scholarship is a welcomed way to accomplish her goal of earning a bachelor's degree in fire administration.

Jacquaine Shepherd of Dallas Awarded 2018 Safety Scholarship

Sometimes, you never know what special talents you may have until you get a chance to use them. Take Jacquaine Shepherd of Dallas, Texas, who works at a manufacturing company. “I started out in my current job by helping the operations manager with small tasks related to safety in order to kill time,” she explained. “I quickly found that I had a real talent and passion for safety. I began to take on a bigger role and was able to create a successful safety culture that has grown and flourished. As a result of my work, I was awarded the Exemplary Safety Leadership Award in 2014 and then again in 2017.”

CSU Employee Honored for Excellent Course Design

On June 26, 2018, representatives from Blackboard, Inc., a leader in virtual learning environments and course management systems, journeyed  to Columbia Southern University to present instructional designer Julia Hart with the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program Award for Liberal Arts Math. The Blackboard Catalyst Awards recognize faculty and course designers from schools, colleges and universities around the world who develop exciting and innovative courses that represent the very best in technology and learning. The Exemplary Course Program category honors courses demonstrating excellence in four areas: assessment, course design, interaction and collaboration, and learner support. This is the university’s second Blackboard Catalyst Award two years in a row, a rare honor.

Tim Neubauer Named 2018 Outstanding Safety Professional

Columbia Southern University recently awarded its annual Outstanding Safety Professional of the Year Award to Tim Neubauer of Henderson, North Carolina. Neubauer holds a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health from CSU and is currently pursuing a master’s degree.

Columbia Southern University Ranked Second on List of ‘Most Affordable Military-Friendly Online Schools’

Columbia Southern University recently was ranked No. 2 among the most affordable military-friendly online schools for 2018. The rankings, released by SR Education Group, list 25 college and universities that work to ensure their educational programs are available to military service members. Specifically, these institutions participate in the military Tuition Assistance program and have high military scores. According to SR Education, these scores were determined using a number of factors, including the strength of military culture, prevalence of support services to online students, flexibility and military-specific financial aid.
