IN SCHOOL COUNSELING

To be admitted to this program, the prospective student must meet all requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies and hold valid baccalaureate level certification in a teaching field. Prior to receiving certification in school counseling, two years of appropriate experience, at least one of which must be in teaching, is required.

• Note: With the exception of courses with prerequisites, courses may be taken in any order.
• MAT/GRE Score: Is an admission requirement.  Students can be admitted conditionally without this score. However, no student will be allowed to take more than 12 hours of graduate credit prior to meeting this requirement.
• Special Education Requirement: Students who have not previously met the special education requirement must take a general survey course in special education (SE 500).
• Internship:  Students cannot begin the internship until they have completed SC 541 (including the 30 hour practicum) and three (3) additional School Counseling (SC) courses. To begin the internship, the student must request an application and other forms from their advisor. After a student registers for the internship (SC 549), they have one year from the end of term in which they register to complete all requirements.  Students will receive a grade of “I” in SC 549 until all requirements are met.  The grade of “I” does not affect the student’s GPA or financial aid, there is no additional cost associated with the “I”, and the student does not have to register for the internship during the subsequent semesters.
• GPA: Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 overall and no grade less than a “C” can be counted in the program.
• Praxis II: Effective Summer 2007, students in this program must take and pass the Praxis II School Guidance and Counseling Test (test code 0420 – passing score 520).  Students should wait until they are within two courses of completing their program to take the Praxis II.  Registration for the Praxis II is completed online at www.ets.org/praxis
• Comprehensive Examination: The  Praxis II is the Comprehensive Examination.
• Application for Degree: Each candidate for a master’s degree must apply for the degree through the Registrar’s Office no later than the semester prior to the semester in which he/she expects to meet requirements for the degree.  Application forms are available online at http://forms.uwa.edu or in the Registrar’s Office.  It is the responsibility of the student to file this application.  The last day for filing an application for a degree is shown in the University calendar.  Students who fail to meet the degree requirements after filing for the degree or diploma must refile for the degree when requirements are completed.
• Application for Certification: Upon satisfactory completion of requirements for the master’s degree (including the State approved professional education requirements and experience) students who initially held or met requirements for an Alabama Class B Professional Certificate will qualify for the appropriate Alabama Class A Professional Certificate.  Out-of-state students should check carefully the requirements of their respective states.  Application for certification is the student’s responsibility and is made through the Certification Officer, The University of West Alabama, Station 8, Livingston, Alabama   35470.
• Transfer Courses: With the approval of the appropriate academic dean, up to 9 hours of graduate credit may be transferred into this program  No transfer credit below the grade of “B” is acceptable.   No transfer credit over 9 years old will be accepted.
