To be admitted to this program, the prospective student must meet all requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies. Teacher certification is not necessary for this degree program. However, students in this program must concentrate in the same field as their undergraduate major. If a student wishes to change fields, they must contact the department chairperson in the new field about undergraduate course work may be required to complete any deficiencies that may exist in the new discipline.

- Note: Science students, with permission of their advisor, may take BY 508 or EN 508 in lieu of EP 500, BY 504 or
EN 504 in lieu of ED 506, and 3 hours of BY 599 or EN 599 in lieu of ED 504.
Students may take an approved research course in their major field in lieu of ED 504.
English and Language Arts students must include EH 501, Research in Literary Studies.
Students in English and Language Arts must also take EH 580 Teaching Composition, if they have no previous
credit for the course.
Students majoring in Language Arts, Science, or Social Science must take courses in at least two areas.
- MAT/GRE Score: Is an admission requirement. Students can be admitted conditionally without this score. However, no student will be allowed to take more than 12 hours of graduate credit prior to meeting this requirement.
- GPA: Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 overall and no grade less than a “C” can be counted in the program.
- Comprehensive Examination: All students are required to pass a comprehensive examination in order to successfully complete a master’s degree program. This examination is scheduled each semester including the Summer semester and is designed to determine the candidate’s ability in his/her particular academic field of study. Application to take the examination must be made two weeks prior to the examinations. Students will be eligible to take this examination when they are within six to nine semester hours of completing all course work for a master’s degree.
- Application for Degree: Each candidate for a master’s degree must apply for the degree through the Registrar’s Office no later than the semester prior to the semester in which he/she expects to meet requirements for the degree. Application forms are available online at http://forms.uwa.edu or in the Registrar’s Office. It is the responsibility of the student to file this application. The last day for filing an application for a degree is shown in the University calendar. Students who fail to meet the degree requirements after filing for the degree or diploma must refile for the degree when requirements are completed.
- Transfer Courses: With the approval of the appropriate academic dean, up to 9 hours of graduate credit may be transferred into this program No transfer credit below the grade of “B” is acceptable. No transfer credit over 9 years old will be accepted.
