I have been a Columbia Southern University (CSU) student since Fall 2006 and have had a very positive experience so far. The reason I choose an online institution was primarily for the flexibility of the coursework. I own a bed and breakfast in Placerville, California (Albert Shafsky House) and also have a full-time job to help pay expenses. Running an inn with less than five rooms does not pay for itself! So I need a study schedule that I can manage between work and the inn and a life.
Taking classes online is the perfect fit for me. I can work when I want, between guests, and if I need clarification from an instructor, I have their phone number and email address. I generally use email if I’m having trouble understanding course material; this works best when I’m working late into the night. The professors typically respond within a day or two and I can move on with the course.
I begin each course by printing out all the materials (syllabi, quizzes, exams, etc.) and then add the timeline to the top of the paperwork and mark off assignments as I go. I add my grades along the way to avoid any surprises at the end.
CSU prides itself on excellent student service and on many occasions I have received the opportunity to experience it firsthand. In one instance, I decided to take a course at the last minute and the staff at CSU generously accommodated my request by rushing a book to me so that I could start the course on time.
An online education may not be for everyone, but CSU makes getting an education realistic and affordable. You are provided with all the help you could ask for – a syllabus, texts, professors, a simple way to ask questions of instructors and fellow students and even a timeline to help you stay on track and finish within a 10 week period. But it is still up to the student to maintain the discipline necessary to finish the courses and do the actual work. If you are focused and really want to learn, CSU is a great choice for continuing your education. I am looking forward to completing my MBA!
